“Cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.”
― Craig Claiborne
Second to the joy of cooking (and EATING) is plating and photographing food. Whether it’s with my trusty Rebel T1i or my quirky iPhone 4., I love playing with colors and angles. Figuring out the best way to showcase what will quickly be devoured.
It’s funny that I’m finally getting around to posting these photos. Today, we had the first measurable snow at my house since I took these photos in 2011. I grew up in the south so I don’t really like cold weather but I’m fascinated by snow.

The day that it snowed I threw on my boots and wandered around my neighborhood in awe. It was so quiet and beautiful. Just me and the sounds of snow crunching under my boots. I have a backlog of photos I wanted to process so I kept pushing these photos back.

I finally got around to them this week and realized that I should have made some exposure adjustments while shooting. I’ve since learned while reading my copy of Understanding Exposure that I should have bracketed against the sky and not the snow.

I had the damndest time processing these photos in Lightroom. Removing the blue tint that snow normally causes. Brightening the snow but not so much that I lost the shadows.

I learned a LOT during this process. I am looking forward to warmth of Spring and cherry blossoms. Look for those photos in the coming month.
It can’t be denied that I love food. I love selecting the ingredients, working through a recipe, smelling the aroma, and EATING! It makes sense that I would combine my love of food with my love of photography. In between shoots with my Rebel I like to pull out my phone and take shots of food I’ve cooked or eaten while out. Since, I’ve been gone for a while I thought I should post some of these photos.

A few weeks back I took a tour of Horton Vineyards in Orange County, VA. I enjoy going to vineyards where they actually have the grapes growing on property. Photos were taken with my iPhone using the Instagram and Camera+ apps.
On a rainy day in October, I sat in Starbucks after a doctor appointment. I had intended to get some photos of the Transformers filming but the rain altered my plans. As I sat there I realized that I had a great show in front of me. Watching the crowds navigate the Chinatown/Gallery Place area in the rain.
To know where you’re going you have to know where you’ve been. Yeah, that’s a pretty mangled version of the actual quote but I wanted to use the time to capture some previous web designs. They used to exist on a separate page of the site before I took that down.

I’ve been enjoying the festival season here and for the past two months I’ve been to at least 1 event every weekend. The camera has been in tow on the hope that I’d get some good event photos and so far so good.
I have more on the hard drive. I just have to weed through and figure out what else should go in the portfolio.
